  • Scarlet Flax (Linum grandiflorum) is a fast-growing annual with airy growth and vivid scarlet-red, silky flowers that bloom from late spring through summer and attract pollinators; plants grow 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall and are ideal for borders, wildflower gardens, containers, and meadows

  • Seeds are best direct sown outdoors after the last frost; in mild climates they can be sown in early spring or fall; Scarlet flax does not transplant well, so direct sowing is recommended

  • Grows best in light, well-draining soil and tolerates poor or sandy conditions; soil pH should be neutral to slightly alkaline

  • To sow, loosen the top layer of soil, scatter seeds evenly on the surface, cover lightly with about ⅛ inch (3 mm) of soil, and water gently; thin seedlings to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) apart

  • Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best flowering; partial shade will reduce blooms

  • Water lightly until germination; once established, plants are drought tolerant and overwatering can cause weak, floppy growth or root rot

  • Seeds typically germinate in 7–14 days at an ideal temperature of 60–70°F (15–21°C)

  • Fertilizing is usually not needed; if soil is extremely poor, apply a light balanced fertilizer once, as excess nutrients lead to leafy growth with fewer flowers

  • Scarlet flax is rarely troubled by pests; aphids may appear occasionally and can be washed off with water; poorly drained soil can lead to root rot

  • Can be grown in deep containers with excellent drainage; allowing flowers to mature will enable self-seeding for future seasons
